That New Animal
a picture book; illustrations by Pierre Pratt; FSG/Frances Foster, 2005
FudgeFudge does not like that new animal.
Marshmallow does not like it either. Not even a little bit. It came
a week ago, and it doesn't seem to be going away. "Do you smell
that new animal smell?" complains FudgeFudge. "It's very
different from a dog smell."
ALA Notable video/DVD, narrated by the author with ridiculous barking and silly voices, available from Scholastic/Weston
Woods for school and libraries, and for families on the Arnie the Doughnut DVD.

"Jenkins...is
quietly making a career...as one of the freshest, most evocative,
and most accessible picture-book writers of family life. Pratt's
paintings are suffused with warm tones and furry-textured brush
strokes that comfort even during the dogs' anxious moments. The
book's unerring identification of the sore spots of dethronement...will
definitely strike chords of recognition in young audiences."

Children's Books, starred
